Oct 09, 2010 Well, as I said, the facility has been removed from Windows Vista and later. However, an experiment here suggests that if you have no alternative, you can restore the ability to read Shell Scrap files by copying the shscrap.dll file and its associated Windows registry entries from a Windows XP system to a 32-bit Windows 7 system. The shs file extension is associated with Microsoft Windows Clipboard service. A clipboard is the location in a computer operating system such as Microsoft Windows that stores information that has been cut or copied from a document or other location. The clipboard will hold this information until it has been overwritten by new information.

What is an SHS file?
An SHS file is a file created by Microsoft Word and Excel when a user drags and drops selected document text onto the desktop. It contains a copy of the highlighted contents in its native document format. SHS files are used to copy portions of a document for insertion into another document.
SHS files are special OLE object files and cannot be opened directly. They can only be dragged into another opened document. When SHS files are created, an associated icon is placed on the desktop. If this icon is deleted, the scrap file is also deleted.
Support for scrap files was discontinued with Windows Vista. Earlier versions of Windows included the Windows Shell Scrap Object Handler, which is stored in the file shscrap.dll. This file handled the drag and drop operations to and from Word and Excel documents to create SHS files. However, SHS files cannot be opened in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, since these Windows versions do not include the handler.
NOTE: SHS files typically have a hidden '.shs' file extension. Be careful when opening them since they are executable and have been known to contain viruses.

Programs that open SHS files
An shs file extension is used for Clipboard files in Windows 95, 98, NT and ME. Every time you pressed Ctrl + C to copy something, it would be saved in Windows clipboard - a file with shs file extension.

A clipboard is the location in a computer operating system such as Microsoft Windows that stores information that has been cut or copied from a document or other location. The clipboard will hold this information until it has been overwritten by new information. For example, the user may copy information from a word processor and paste that information into an e-mail message.
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, and ME come installed with a clipboard viewer that can be run by clicking Start → Programs → System Tools and clicking Clipboard Viewer. The clipboard viewer is also executable through the clipbrd.exe file in the Windows directory.
For newer Windows version its described as Microsoft Windows Shell Scrap Object file.
This shs file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.
This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.
